Beside the well, there was the ruin of an old stone wall.

 

When I came back from my work, the next evening, I saw from some distance away my little prince sitting on top of a wall, with his feet dangling.

 

And I heard him say.

 

"Then you don't remember.  This is not the exact spot."

 

Another voice must have answered him, for he replied to it.

 

"Yes, yes! It is the right day, but this is not the place."

 

I continued my walk toward the wall.

 

At no time did I see or hear anyone.

 

The little prince, however, replied once again.

 

"Exactly. you will see where my track begins, in the sand.

 

you have nothing to do but wait for me there.

 

I shall be there tonight."

 

I was only twenty metres from the wall, and I still saw nothing.

 

After a silence the little prince spoke again.

 

"You have good poison? 

 

You are sure that it will not make me suffer too long?"

 

I stopped in my tracks, my heart torn asunder; but still I did not understand.

 

"Now go away." said the little prince. 

 

I want to get down from the wall."

 

I dropped my eyes, then, to the foot of the wall and I leaped into the air.

 

There before me, facing the little prince , was one of those yellow snakes that take just thirty seconds to bring your life to end.

 

Even as I was digging into my pocket to get out my revolver I made a running step back. 

 

But, at the noise I made, the snake let himself flow easily across the sand like the dying spray of a fountain, and, in no appaarent hurry, disapeared, with a light metallic sound, among the stones.

우물옆에는, 낡은 돌벽의 잔해가 있었다.

내가 내 일에서 저녁에 돌아왔을 때, 어린왕자가 다리를 흔들며 벽 위에 앉아 있는 것을 보았다.

 

And I heard him say.

그리고 나는 그가 말하는 것을 들었다.

 

"Then you don't remember.  This is not the exact spot."

"너는 기억하지 못하겠지만.. 여기가 정확한 장소는 아니야."

 

Another voice must have answered him, for he replied to it.

또다른 목소리가 들렸음에 틀림없다. 그리고 그는 그 목소리에 대답했다.

 

"Yes, yes! It is the right day, but this is not the place."

"맞아맞아. 오늘은 맞지만.. 장소는 틀렸어."

나는 벽쪽으로 계속 걸어갔다.

 

At no time did I see or hear anyone.

나는 결코 어떤 것을 보거나 듣지는 못했다.

 

The little prince, however, replied once again.

하지만 어린왕자는 또 다시 대답하였다.

 

"Exactly. you will see where my track begins, in the sand.

"맞아. 너는 모래에 남겨진 내 발자국을 볼 수 있구나.

 

you have nothing to do but wait for me there.

거기서 그냥 기다려. (기다리는 것 말고는 할게 없다.)

 

I shall be there tonight."

오늘 밤에 거기로 갈게."

 

I was only twenty metres from the wall, and I still saw nothing.

나는 벽까지 20미터가 남았는데, 여전히 아무것도 볼 수 없었다.

 

After a silence the little prince spoke again.

잠시간의 침묵 이후에 어린 왕자는 다시 말했다.

 

"You have good poison? 

"너 좋은 독 가지고 있지?

 

You are sure that it will not make me suffer too long?"

그게 나를 오랫동안 아프게 하지 않는 것 맞지?"

나는 가던 길을 멈추었는데. 심장이 몹시 두근거렸다. 하지만 무슨 상황인지 여전히 이해하지 못했다.

 

"Now go away." said the little prince. 

"이제 가~" 어린왕자가 말했다.

 

I want to get down from the wall."

나는 내려가고 싶거든."

 

I dropped my eyes, then, to the foot of the wall and I leaped into the air.

나는 벽 아래를 쳐다보고는 미친 듯이 달렸다.

거기 어린왕자와 마주하고 있는 것은 30초만에 너를 죽일 수 있는 독을 가진 노란 뱀이었다.

호주머니를 뒤져서 권총을 꺼낸 후 달렸다.

그러나, 내가 낸 소리에 뱀은 분수의 불살이 잦아들듯이 금속성의 소리를 내며 돌 틈으로 서둘러 사라져버렸다.

asunder : 산산히  뿔뿔히

 

leap : 서둘러 뛰어오르다.
