I realised clearly that something extraordinary was happening.

 

I was holding him close in my arms as if he were a little child; and yet it seemed to me that he was rushing headlong toward an abyss from which I could do nothing to restrain him.

 

His look was very serious, like some one lost far away.

 

"I have your sheep. And I have the sheep's box. And I have the muzzle..."

 

And he gave me a sad smile.

 

I waited a long time.

 

I could see that he was reviving little by little.

 

"Dear little man." I said to him. "you are afraid..."

 

He was afraid, there was no doubt about that.

 

But he laughed lightly.

 

"I shall be much more afraid this evening..."

 

Once again I felt frozen by the sense something irreparable.

 

And I knew that I could not bear the thought if never hearing that laughter any more. 

 

For me, it was like a spring of fresh water in the desert.

나는 어떤 엄청난 일이 벌어지고 있음을 깨달았다.

나는 그를 진짜 아이처럼 꽉 안았다. 하지만 그는 내가 막을 수 없는 깊은 구렁텅이로 빠져드는 것처럼 보였다.

 

His look was very serious, like some one lost far away.

그는 매우 진지했고, 아득히 먼 곳을 헤매는 것 같았다.

 

"I have your sheep. And I have the sheep's box. And I have the muzzle..."

"나는 니가 준 양이 있고 상자랑 입마개도 있어."

 

And he gave me a sad smile.

슬픈 미소를 지었다.

 

I waited a long time.

나는 오래도록 기다렸다.

 

I could see that he was reviving little by little.

나는 그가 점점 기력을 되찾는 것을 볼 수 있었다.

 

"Dear little man." I said to him. "you are afraid..."

"얘야." 내가 말했다. "무서웠구나."

 

He was afraid, there was no doubt about that.

그가 무서워했던 것은 분명했다.

 

But he laughed lightly.

하지만 그는 가만히 웃었다.

 

"I shall be much more afraid this evening..."

"오늘 저녁은 더 무서울거야."

 

Once again I felt frozen by the sense something irreparable.

다시 한번 돌이킬 수 없는 어떤 감정으로 나는 얼어버렸다.

 

And I knew that I could not bear the thought if never hearing that laughter any more. 

그리고 나는 다시는 그의 웃음을 볼 수 없겠다는 생각이 들자 더 이상 참을 수 없었다.

 

For me, it was like a spring of fresh water in the desert.

나에게 그의 웃음은 사막의 신선한 물과도 같았었다.
